In 1734, the Dutch East India Company commissioned Cornelis Pronk to produce designs for a set of China plates. This porcelain, so-called Chine de commande, was produced in China, then shipped to Europe and sold there. Pronk made four different designs, of which 'The Parasol Ladies' was most popular. The Dutch East India Company ended the deal in 1740 because the production and shipping from China proved too costly. The original watercolour for the design is now in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (link). The design was quickly adopted on Japanese porcelain.

The 'Cabana' is a storage unit arranged around a central column supporting five shelves. The structure, made in aluminum and other metals, is entirely concealed by dangling lengths of fire-proofed raffia.
The Campana Brothers, Humberto and Fernando, are among the icons of contemporary furniture design. Since 1983, the Brazilian siblings have achieved both national and international recognition and popularity thanks to their ingenious designs and creativity. The brothers (Humberto Campana, b. 1953 and Fernando Campana, b. 1961) created Estudio Campana in 1984 in São Paulo. From the very beginning, collaboration with local communities, factories, and industries have been an important part of their activities. In view of this mindset, it comes as no surprise that there is a huge emphasis on handcrafted and artisanal work. Via their pieces, the Campana Brothers institute conversation around ethical production, sustainability and social awareness into some of the world’s most alluring interiors.
Estudio Campana is recognized for its intriguing and one-of-a-kind pieces. There is no better evidence of their overflowing creativity than listing their current activities: the studio operates in the areas of architecture, landscaping, scenography, fashion as well as special projects and commissions. Their creative process raises everyday materials to nobility, bringing not only creativity to design but also Brazilian characteristics - the colours, the mixtures, the creative chaos - the triumph of simple solutions, in an artistic and poetic way. Campana pieces are part of permanent collections of renowned cultural institutions such as Centre Pompidou and the Musée Des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, MoMa, New York, Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo and Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein. They have worked with Alessi and Fontana Arte on limited edition pieces, and their studio crafts its own unique handmade pieces. Those special editions are included in the permanent collections of renowned cultural institutions as well.
The São Paulo-based studio is acknowledged internationally as pioneer of disruptive design, which led them to create a ground-breaking language in their field. Proudly rooted in Brazilian culture and traditions, their works carry universal values in their core, such as freedom and human dignity, through the search of our identity from life experiences. In 2009, the Campana Brothers founded Instituto Campana, in order to preserve their ever-growing collection for future generations and to promote design as a tool for transformation through social and educational programs.
Their unique designs have earned them numerous awards, including the Ordre des Arts et Lettres from the Ministry of Culture in France and the Order of Cultural Merit in Brazil. Their work has been the subject of several exhibitions, including the 2008 exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York (link).

Tiberio Matelassè designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Emmemobili is a sideboard made of veneered panels with elements in veneered multilayer wood, worked on matelassé effect. The base in burnished hand-brushed brass and inner parts in the same veneer of the structure.
Born in 1960, Ferruccio Laviani is part of a generation of Italian designers who rose to fame in the 1990's by joining the Memphis Group (movement founded by Ettore Sottsass in the 1980's). The architect really launched his international career by participating in the Memphis “12 Newcomers” (1986) and “Living on Earth” (1987) collections. He soon started prestigious collaborations with Achille Castiglioni or the Foscarini and Kartell brands, for which he created, among other things, the Bourgie lamp and the Max table, two of his greatest successes.

Founded in 1810, VM (Vincenz Mayer) was almost as well known as Rothe. The address was Stock-in-Eisen-Platz 7 in the first district of the inner city of Vienna. They made all the Imperial Austrian Orders, along with some smaller pieces such as the Marianna Cross and Red Cross decorations. They also made insignias for various countries, such as Greece, Romania and Serbia. The stars often had a large circular plaque on the reverse with the name and an imperial Austrian eagle. The badges and the stars have initials “V.M” often on more than one location of the piece. After the death of Vincenz Mayer in 1865, his three sons, Vincenz, Joseph and Franz successfully took over the business. Their mark can often be identified as a “VMS” which is usually framed. Their products were of such high quality, they were appointed K.u.K. (royal and imperial) court jewellers and later chamber jewellers to the Emperor and Empress. Due to the economic crisis following the First World War, V. Mayer's Söhne closed in 1922.

'Michel Buylen (Ghent, °1953) is a multi-faceted and headstrong painter, who never ceases to astonish with both his amazing virtuosity and his new take on centuries-old subjects; such as the nude (or the naked?), the child, the landscape, the sea as an obligate abstraction and the portrait as compromise and confrontation. Michel Buylen is anything but a conventional artist. Aided by acrylic, he succeeds in retranslating life, in all its diversity and nuances, enriching it with his own vision.' (link)

"Clement Serneels was the son of a Spanish mother and Flemish father. He went to school in Brussels. In 1936 while at the Academie he won a government scholarship for a one year painting trip to the Congo. On his return to Brussels he had an exhibition of his Congo paintings, it was a sell-out. He then left once again to continue working in the Congo. In 1939 during World War II he settled at Lake Kivu, Congo. Then in 1945 Clement visited South
Africa and stayed for some months in Cape Town. He had sell-out exhibitions in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. In 1948 he revisited South Africa and had another successful exhibition in Johannesburg. From there he took his work on an exhibition tour of Mexico and the USA. From 1951 – 1960 he continued to live at Lake Kivu in the Congo, although continuously making visits to Europe and holding exhibitions in Brussels and Lisbon. Following upheavals in the Congo, Clement Serneels moved to Johannesburg in South Africa where he established himself as a successful artist." (link)

Early in his career, Ludovic Janssen was given the title 'Le peintre de la Campine', a title he shares with Emile Van Doren (1865-1949), a landscape painter from whom he received advice in Genk. It is possible that Janssen discovered the Limburg Kempen thanks to his teacher at the Liège Académie, Evariste Carpentier (1845-1922). Carpentier was an important promoter of Genk as a painting place. Under his impulse, many art students from Liège found their way to Genk, including, in addition to Janssen, Albert Sirtaine (1868-1959), Armand Jamar (1870-1946), Léon Jamin (1872-1944) and Valérie Pholien (1873-1961).
