The  work (later) signed and dated 'J. Vernet 1788' to make of this Flemish 17th C. painting a French 18th C. painting by Claude Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Both the subject and the painting style betray the hand of Jan Peeters I (1624-1678), a Flemish Baroque painter and draughtsman.
