Jozef J. Peters began his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He won several prizes: the first prize for wood and stone carving, the silver medal of the State, the first prize summa cum laude, the Rotary prize and the gold medal of the State for sculpting from a figure to life with Prof. A. Dupon. He also received the first prize magna cum laude and the Rotary prize for sculpting from a figure to life with Prof. W. Kreitz. In 1956 he was nominated for the Prix de Rome. He perfected his skills at the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts for five years; in 1959 he was laureate. From then on he worked as an independent artist. In the seventies he was the driving force behind the re-establishment of the Academy of Mortsel, of which he became director in 1977 in addition to being a teacher (link).
