Work: about 34 x 25 cm
Frame: 47,2 x 37,8 cm
The first drawing is a copy after the 1637 painting ‘A Polish Nobleman’ by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). However, it is probably not a portrait of a specific individual; instead it represents a more generic exotic type that Rembrandt favored during the 1630s. According to some historians and art historians, it may, however, be a self-portrait. The painting is currently located in the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC (coll. Number 1937.1.78, former collection Catherina II the Great and Andrew Mellon, link).
The second drawing is a copy of ‘Portrait of bearded man in black baret’, currently part of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Zwinger, Dresden, coll. number: Gal.-Nr. 1567 (link).
