The story behind the painting: Trotteyn had an appointment with a certain Angèle De Vos at the castle of Laarne, visible in the background. However, Angèle did not show up, hence the title of the work. Angèle De Vos was married to a certain Parmentier from Gentbrugge and was the sister-in-law of Suzanne Parmentier, who was married to Jules Van Huffel. De Vos always claimed that she would never reach the age of 30. During the war, her lover wanted to flee with her (presumably a German officer). She refused, he shot her dead. She was 29 at the time.
