- Ex-collection Baron Beyens (Napoléon Eugène Louis Joseph Marie Auguste, 1855-1934), a famous Belgian diplomat and minister, son of Eugène Beyens (1816-1894) and Maria de las Merce des Alcala Galiano y Valencia (1828-1917), husband of Marguerite Oppenheim whom he married on the 1st of June 1899 in Paris. The origins of the Beyens family, a family of lawyers and diplomats, lie in Nazareth, the municipality where the auction house is also located (link).

- A vertical hairline of ca. 8 cm to the body of the vase, with a related star-shaped hairline on the inside, invisible to the naked eye but showing up under UV-light.

A slender vase with a design with six penguins in different poses.
A vase of similar design is used on the cover of the book Art Deco Ceramics - Charles Catteau, by Marc Pairon for the Fondation Charles Catteau. On p. 281 and p. 669 it is described as rare.
Our current example, however, is an anomaly to the known examples. Instead of black glaze, the painter has applied a very dark cobalt blue, which makes this a stand-out example versus other vases of this type.

- The base in very good condition, with some minor negligible chips hardly worth mentioning, especially to the bottom and one of the corners of the platform. Two hardly visible small restorations on one side. See also the additional pictures.

The painter Michel Bouillon (de Bouillon) was born in Ere. Ca. 1638 he became a member of the painters guild of Tournai. Maybe he was in the sixties active in France. He died most probably in 1674. He is best known for still lives (link).

- Relined.
- Minor damage to the borders, due to a previous framing, with some related restorations and minor flaking paint.
- The UV-light shows the typical colour of the varnish, with small restorations and touch-ups all over (see additional UV-light pcitures).

- The frame generally in good and stable condition. Typical minor superficial wear. Small losses to the gilded stucco to the lower left and right corner. A stain to the tissue in the lower left corner from viewer's perspective.
- The work in very good condition. Appearing somewhat retouched along the left edge from viewer's perspective, possibly after completion of the work, in order to fit into an existing frame. A small superficial scratch, hardly worth mentioning, in the upper right corner, some ten cm down from the top and ca. five cm towards the center from the right edge. Possibly with a small retouched spot to the lower right corner (see UV-photograph). The work relined.
Maud is one of Théo van Rysselberghe's favourite models in the early 20th C. She appears on several of his works in the years running up to 1916, for example:

Aside from blue-chip artists such as Renoir, Soutine or Diebenkorn, Mr. Rothberg also championed emerging talents at the time, specifically women artists. He bought a number of their works at a time when such names were not as actively sought after as they are today on the art market. Among them are Louise Nevelson, Louise Bourgeois, Alice Baber, Dorothea Tanning, Alice Helicka (link).

Jos Schippers studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp under the supervision of a.o. Léon de Meuter Brunin (1861-1949) and Pieter Van Havermaet (&834-1897). At the beginning of his career, he mainly painted landscapes and boat scenes. His fame increased enormously when he switched to a more anecdotal genre with monkeys. In these scenes, the monkeys are the substitutes for humans.

- The varnish is a little thinner at the edges. Some brush hairs visible in the work.
